KPMG International becomes first Big Four international entity to attain ISO 42001 certification for AI Management Systems

London, UK (Dec. 31, 2025) – KPMG International is pleased to announce that it has achieved the ISO 42001:2023 certification, the world’s first international standard for AI Management Systems. KPMG International is the first of the Big Four’s international entities to receive this accolade, underscoring the firm’s global leadership in responsible, ethical, and trustworthy AI. This achievement builds on the momentum of ISO 42001 certifications already earned by KPMG member firms in Australia, Spain, India, and the USA.

ISO 42001, developed by the International Organization for Standardization, provides a comprehensive framework for the design, development, and use of AI systems. The standard requires a robust system of controls to ensure accountability and trust while mitigating risk in AI deployment.

“KPMG is committed to leading when it comes to trust and AI, and this certification is an exciting demonstration of that commitment,” said Steve Chase, Global Head of AI & Digital Innovation, KPMG International. “You can’t guide clients on an AI journey you aren’t on yourself, and that’s why we’re investing in the same AI governance and standards that we advise clients on.”

Trusted AI has long been a cornerstone of KPMG’s AI transformation. From day one, the firm has championed bold, fast and responsible AI innovation, and achieving the ISO 42001 certification stands as a clear testament to that dedication. This milestone not only validates the firm’s leadership in ethical AI but also strengthens its ability to help multinational clients adhere to global standards and navigate an increasingly complex regulatory landscape. It also furthers KPMG’s efforts to support the certification of our clients in other regions, helping them align with best practices for responsible AI deployment.

“Scaling AI and governance go hand in hand,” added Chase. “We’ve set our own high bar, embedding trust directly into our AI systems to enable the confidence to move fast and deliver value without compromising on ethics.”

This recognition reflects years of work building safe, reliable and responsible AI systems. The certification is a major milestone that reinforces trust among clients and regulators. It gives KPMG member firms confidence to use AI tools like KPMG Workbench and aIQ Chat, knowing they meet internationally recognized standards. It enables KPMG International to help firms looking to certify their own local AI systems.

“The ISO 42001 certification confirms that KPMG’s global AI management processes meet international standards,” said Konstantin Aushev, Partner & Head of Technology practice, KPMG Caucasus and Central Asia. “In our offices across the Caucasus and Central Asia, these practices are already being applied, helping clients implement AI safely, responsibly, and with maximum efficiency. We are committed to creating solutions that are trusted by both business and society.”

The certification process for KPMG International was conducted by Schellman Compliance, an ISO 42001 accredited certification body.

“We are delighted to receive this certification, which affirms our unwavering commitment to translating Trusted AI principles into meaningful, measurable practice,” said Aisha Tahirkheli, Principal and U.S. Trusted AI Leader. “As pioneers in the field, we take pride in setting global benchmarks and equipping our clients with a clear, actionable roadmap and a patent-pending methodology to achieve similar success.”

KPMG continues to advance its leadership in AI governance with a comprehensive portfolio of services, including AI Assurance and KPMG AI Trust. Powered by cutting-edge platforms such as Microsoft, Google, ServiceNow, and Cranium, these offerings enable organizations to scale AI responsibly and confidently every step of the way.

“Trust and responsibility are the foundation of our AI approach,” said Samantha Gloede, Global Head of Risk Services and Global Trusted AI Leader, KPMG International. “We are delighted to receive this certification, which affirms our unwavering commitment to building and scaling AI solutions that our clients and society can trust. We will continue to embed our Trusted AI principles into every aspect of our work.”
