ICLR launches Toronto Climate Resilience Centre at Accenture to advance climate risk mitigation

Toronto, ON (June 1, 2025) – The Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR) and Accenture are excited to announce the launch of the ICLR Toronto Climate Resilience Centre in Accenture’s downtown Toronto office. The Centre will serve as a hub for insurance and reinsurance companies, brokers, reinsurance intermediaries, supply chain professionals, and other stakeholders committed to addressing climate-related risks and enhancing both residential and commercial resilience.

The Resilience Centre is part of ICLR’s growing network of climate resilience centers focused on advancing research, education, and the demonstration of practical climate risk mitigation strategies. Accenture is hosting the Centre as part of its global commitment to improving climate resilience and helping businesses transform their performance.

Paul Kovacs, Executive Director, Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR), said: “Canadians experienced $13 billion in preventable damage last year from climate extremes. ICLR is proud to partner with Accenture as a strong leader in reinvention and technology services to showcase actions that homeowners and businesses can take to prepare for future risks in the age of data and AI advancements. Small and collaborative investments in protection will significantly reduce damage from flooding, wildfire, and severe storms.”

Puneet ChaLree, Insurance Strategy and Consulting Lead for Canada, Accenture, added: “The impact from the velocity and frequency of climate related disasters has taken an unprecedented toll on Canadians and the role insurers play. There is increased vulnerability in the system for Canadians with rising deductibles and premiums triggered by year over year historical insurance losses. This is leading to the exit of carrier and risk transfer business in certain parts of our country, and increased pressure on the insurance ecosystem to deliver protection, process unprecedented claims and provide advice during unprecedented events. It is critical that the insurance sector along with key stakeholder groups from government come together on the shared focus to build resiliency for Canadians and the insurance sector through reinvention in how climate risk is measured, managed and prevented. The role of advancement in data-led and AI capabilities is instrumental in advancing this focus and bringing loss levels from the $8.5B seen in 2024 to below the $2B historical 10 year average. The mandate of ICLR is critical to building this resiliency, and Accenture is pleased and humbled at the opportunity to collaborate through the opening of our Toronto Resiliency Centre.”

Phil Gibson, Senior Advisor, Accenture, added: “Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time. Individuals and organizations must act decisively and strategically to mitigate its risks. We are proud to host the Centre and to provide access to Accenture’s transformation experts. The Toronto Resilience Centre will be a place where industry leaders come together to learn, collaborate, and develop innovative solutions to reduce climate risks. We are excited to partner with ICLR on this impacaul initiative for Canadians.”

The Centre will provide a range of services, including climate risk assessments, strategic advice, and access to advanced tools and frameworks for reducing climate vulnerabilities. It will also host events, workshops, and webinars to promote best practices in climate resilience, sustainability, and risk management.

The Toronto Climate Resilience Centre is poised to be a vital resource for businesses across Canada looking to prepare for and mitigate the impacts of climate change. The Grand Opening took place on May 15th.
