Before AI Comes Data: Why Standards are the Real Foundation of Generative AI
By Kathryn Sinclair, CSIO
New AI tools are emerging almost daily, promising to transform how we work, improve productivity and redefine the customer experience. AI has enormous potential to improve the way our industry serves Canadians. But before there is artificial intelligence, there must first be intelligent data. Generative AI doesn't create knowledge on its own; the quality of its insights, recommendations and decisions depends entirely on the quality of the data behind it. Protecting “Learnings” for Competitive Advantage

(Continued from last week)

In this context, the term “learnings” refers to the additional information entered into a knowledge base as policy guidelines, compliance rules, the results from previous decisions, etc.

With an agentic system from a vendor, the reasonings from all participants are typically shared. (Those users could well include some of your competitors.) With a proprietary agentic system, the reasonings are yours alone.

Because of the larger volume of new reasonings in a shared platform, the knowledge base grows more quickly and could result in better decisions all round – but potentially to the detriment of your competitive advantage.

However, even with a shared agentic system, it is possible to keep your own contributions in-house: outside of the shared knowledge base, but still used by the agentic system when working on your business. Consequently, your competitive advantage remains intact.

A knowledge base split this way has another potential advantage. If you were to change agentic system platforms, you would lose the knowledge base to which you had contributed your reasonings. With separate proprietary reasonings, your own reasonings can go with you.

Such a split knowledge base is good in theory, but it is practical?

There are pros and cons, obviously – and a decision to be made.
