Protecting “Learnings” for Competitive Advantage

As previously discussed, agentic systems have some significant advantages:

• The input of further guidance and explanations, along with the results of decisions previously made, increases the depth of the knowledge base.

• These “reasonings” improve the quality of future decisions.

• The reasonings are available to all the AI Agents that use this knowledge base.

When the knowledge base and reasoning exist within the domain of your business's knowledge workers, their skill and experience are a potential competitive advantage for you.

This is a factor when a business decides whether to develop its own agentic system or to purchase from a third party.

For those built in-house, the knowledge base is unique to the business. For those provided by a vendor, the knowledge base may be a composite of all users, including your competitors.

The latter may well grow faster, which could result in better decisions than the former – for everyone. On the other hand, your competitors using the same vendor / knowledge base will derive the same value as you. This of course removes one dimension of competitive advantage.

The relative importance of the quality of decision making as a competitive factor to your business would be an important consideration in deciding to build versus buy.

Next week, more options.
