Insurance and Managing Risk

Last week, I commented on the idea of “life insurance” evolving into “insurance for living,” with a focus on maintaining a healthy body and mind. Thus, life insurance providers become participants in a person's health – even before they get sick or die. Health insurance is not only care, cure and recovery, but growing to include more prevention programs such as exercise, vaccines, etc. This overlap between life and health insurance appears to be increasing.

Might “life” and “health” merge into one “insurance for living” service?

In property & casualty insurance, accident and fire insurance as distinct products have been largely subsumed into auto insurance and home insurance, the latter even further into broader personal property insurance.

P&C insurance has long promoted risk reduction, through government regulations (building codes), mass marketing and individual policyholder advisories. Credits for risk-reducing factors are a tradition.

Technology innovations in sensors, data and communications have enabled the early predictive indicators of an event, the detection of events (e.g. leaking water), and even action in response (notification or automatic shutoff), allowing for better pricing of ever-finer risk factors, immediate access to data, and opportunities to engage for the purposes of better managing risk pro-actively.

The nature of the relationship between customers and insurance services continues to evolve, led by innovators who leverage new capabilities to enhance the value.

Where might this lead?
