AI Innovation: Personal AI Agents

Over the last half-century, digital tools such as spreadsheets and document processors have continually evolved, most recently with the addition of AI. As an example, Grammarly – which was launched in 2009 as a rigid, rule-based academic spellchecker – has evolved into an omnipresent, agentic AI productivity suite today.

Meta's announcement of Muse in September seemed like a big step. Its ability to research and buy caught my attention. How does it work?

A consumer, in his Meta account, requests his AI assistant to shop for an item, perhaps a book, within any desired parameters (in this case, most likely title, author, and/or subject).

The assistant would request guidance as needed in order to select a specific book, format and source to match the user's preferences, while learning these preferences for future use.

With guidance, the assistant could proceed go through the entire process of selection and purchase; currently, payment is only made with final approval from the user.

Several personal assistant providers like Muse are competing for your business today; meanwhile, more are emerging.

As this shopping functionality develops, there are issues and challenges. Take the book example: Amazon will not deal with a Muse assistant (but that could change at any time).

Like a book vendor, the insurance industry provides products and services to people. How is their support of personal assistants progressing? Stay tuned for more next week.
