Telematics, Agentic Systems & Auto Insurance

Innovations are driving change in both vehicles and drivers. Auto insurance will respond. Consider three areas:

Operating Expenses: In one future scenario, prominent industry experts explicitly predict that agentic AI networks will evolve to functionally operate as entirely autonomous insurance entities, brokers, or managing general agents.

Although theoretically expenses could be dramatically reduced, they will not disappear.

Whether it is an agentic system for one line of business or a function across several lines of business, many considerations remain, from licensing to compliance, ownership, assignment of responsibility, and more.

Driver Behaviour: Evidence proves that telematics programs, when paired with real-time feedback or financial incentives, significantly reduce both the frequency and severity of car accidents and insurance claims.

Perhaps two-thirds of commercial drivers participate in such a program, while for personal drivers, participation is less than 15%. For drivers not involved, auto insurance does not change very much.

Autonomous vehicles: A comprehensive IIHS study found that Waymo driverless vehicles had a 68% lower overall crash involvement rate per mile traveled than human drivers across major urban testing. Moreover, other human drivers are at fault in roughly 85-90% of multi-party collisions.

Conclusion: The forces of change will impact those in the insurance business. How and when the changes will unfold remains to be seen, but they could be dramatic.
