Sustainable Competitive Advantage From Better Reasoning

In looking for an example of good reasoning from bygone days which could lead eventually to the potential sustainable competitive advantage that agentic systems might offer, I thought of Progressive Insurance.

Matteo Carbone cites Progressive as an example of a company which sustainably leverages telematics data.

This reference, though, initially predates telematics data, going back to earlier in the '90s when Progressive's call centre began noting the rates of three competitors during the quoting process.

This highlighted Progressive's transparency, which increased the trust level – a factor which is back in vogue again today.

Naturally, if Progressive had the lower price, or if the differential was small, the customer might well just accept the quote rather than repeating the process elsewhere. But either way, some customer information was retained, potentially of use in the future. And being first to offer competitive quotes was in itself a marketing advantage.

In those days of relatively simple analytics and long before any AI, the significant decisions were of a tactical nature:

• Take advantage of available third-party data – rate filings;
• Address transparency and increase trust – include competitive quotes;
• Retain and leverage all data – including non-accepted quotes.

How did this base evolve? What are the implications for tomorrow, and for agentic systems?
