Autonomous Passenger Cars: The Latest

It comes as no surprise that developments in autonomous vehicles have their focal point in the U.S. – the R&D and deployment leader globally.

New traffic enforcement: California has finalized new rules allowing police to ticket driverless cars, holding the parent companies accountable.

Congress recently advanced the SELF DRIVE Act, establishing a new unified federal framework to govern the development and deployment of automated driving systems and streamline safety exemptions.

Amazon's Zoox quadrupled its operating footprint in San Francisco and launched new testing in Austin and Miami,

Tesla rolled out its Robotaxi service more broadly across Texas

Alphabet's Waymo continues as a leader:

Waymo expanded its commercial driverless taxi operations to 10 U.S. cities, officially entering Miami, Orlando, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, and began testing for employees in Nashville.

Waymo officially reached 500,000 paid robotaxi rides per week, a tenfold increase since May 2024. Their end-of-2026 goal is 1 million weekly rides.

Waymo rolled out its 6th-generation Waymo Driver, designed to drastically lower costs while broadening coverage. The fleet reached approximately 3,700 robotaxis in service.

Uber and Lyft have robotaxis in their offerings.

With deployment growing rapidly, have there been any surprises among the anticipated impacts?
