Open Insurance

I have been labouring under a misunderstanding about “open insurance”; I had thought it was something narrow and specific, but it is much broader in scope than I realized.

There are two relevant meanings:

• In traditional insurance contracts, the word “open” typically describes policies where specific details (such as the value of cargo or the list of authorized drivers) are determined after the contract is created.
• The second relates to sharing of data, my interest.

European regulators (EIOPA) have considered open insurance in its work so far in this broadest sense, covering accessing and sharing insurance-related personal and non-personal data usually via APIs.

Some examples of data-sharing in Canada:

• Within the industry (prior claims, fraud);
• With regulated providers (credit, driver records);
• Other providers (telematics services, flood maps, repair cost services).

From new capabilities, innovations continue in growing areas such as:

Parametric insurance (providers of data which triggers a claim);
Embedded insurance (data received from and returned to non-insurance retailers or other providers).

As has always been the case, insurance innovators will explore opportunities to improve and expand the insurance business. Open insurance is a contributing factor in the evolution of insurance products and services.

What will the industry look like in a decade?
