The Evolution of Telematics In Insurance

The focus of my career has been the use of technology for insurance purposes. Thirty years ago, Progressive Insurance's telematics offering captured my attention as the telematics data enabled insurance more precisely aligned with the risk.

Advances since then, particularly in commercial auto, have been dramatic:

• Smart phone apps replaced the dongle, offering easier implementation and lowering costs.
• Communications via the internet has grown steadily faster, less expensive and more ubiquitous – 5G and satellites continue to expand. Even Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2X) communications are being developed and tested.
• Local “edge” computing in in-cab devices has enabled instant notification of an issue – notifying a driver who is beginning to fall asleep, or failing to pay attention.
AI, AI Agents and Agentic Systems are all in play, playing a key role in predicting issues and helping to prevent them.

Broadly speaking, telematics helps to:

• Improve safety;
• Lower costs;
• Enable insurance discounts; and
• Reduce environmental impact.

As telematics for commercial auto has so many tentacles, the industry is moving towards unified, open operating platforms.

The amazing evolution of telematics serves as a great example of how technology innovation can have a broad impact.
