From Doug

The promise of AI Agents and Agentic AI is to automate humdrum semi-clerical portions of processes.

Not long ago, management simply decided to invest in technology to reduce total costs, and specifically to reduce people costs.

A remark by Khristal Karen caught my attention:

“The line between human oversight and AI-powered tasks is clear. AI in traditional insurance jobs is no longer just automating routine work; it's enhancing it. Roles are evolving: titles stay, but daily responsibilities shift as humans and AI technologies work together to make better decisions.”

In other words, provide better support for people so they can focus on more important decisions.

What has changed? After all, some (most?) insurance purchases are based largely on cost.

But the nature of competition has evolved from cost to other factors.

Today, businesses compete on customer experience and satisfaction, empathy, even risk management advice, reflecting the industry trend towards a predict and prevent model.

This expanded focus makes the insurance business more complex, requiring more people.

In summary: AI will reduce processing workload; but more people and new skills are needed to manage the increasing complexity in order to compete and move to new insurance models.

On balance then, new skills, but more or fewer people?
