Helping Insurance Clients Manage Risk

Manulife just announced a multi-cancer early detection test as a new addition to their Vitality program, an add-on to eligible life and health/dental insurance products which rewards members for healthy lifestyle choices.

Members earn points by being active (walking, running), getting preventative care (check-ups and vaccinations), and completing health reviews. The points unlock rewards like discounts on insurance premiums, gift cards, and deals on products.

Healthy activities earn points, including:

• Physical activity: Track walks, runs, and other workouts.
• Preventative care: dental check-ups, vaccinations, and other screenings.
• Healthy habits: healthy sleep, completing online health courses, etc.

The more points, the higher the Vitality Status level (Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum).

Physical activity is tracked by linking personal fitness devices (wearables such as the Apple watch or Fitbit) and health apps (Google Fit, Samsung Health) to the Manulife Vitality mobile app. Self-reported information such as verification documents for health checks and screenings, physical activities etc can be manually entered.

Programs like Vitality are intended and fine-tuned to modify behaviour in order to reduce risk.

It is fascinating to watch new programs arrive and existing ones evolve across all types of insurance, increasing the value of insurance to customers.
