From Doug

A salesperson once asked me rhetorically why we spend all our time focused on internal operations and distribution when most of the insurance company's outflow is in claims.

Even four decades ago, risk management was important, e.g. via premium discounts or marketing partnerships to motivate customers to reduce personal property.

In 2017, Guarantee Insurance received an Insurance-Canada.ca Technology Award (ICTA) for their GOLD Watermark project to detect water leaks and turnoff the water supply (standalone, no connectivity) in high-end dwellings, free of charge.

Today, prevention and mitigation is the big InsurTech opportunity in homeowners insurance.

A recent deep-dive by Matteo Carbone – “Can InsurTech fix homeowner insurance?” – addresses telematics in property insurance, and the impact in two areas in the US market: electrical (Whisker Lab) and water damage (Ondo). His analysis found that 15 points on the combined ratio that can be addressed with fire protection solutions, and 21 points with water leak prevention.

Today, several insurers in Canada offer telematics-enabled water-leak detection with auto shut-off with substantial premium discounts.

Smart home monitoring tools are increasinging, an integral part of the ‘Predict and Prevent’ approach.
