Another example of the rapid changes in insurance technology, AI agents are software systems that use AI to pursue goals and complete tasks on behalf of users. They are enabled by generative AI and AI foundation models.

They show reasoning, planning, and memory and have a level of autonomy to make decisions, learn, and adapt. They can converse, reason, learn, and make decisions. They can learn over time and facilitate transactions and business processes. Agents can work with other agents. Read more.

Already different types of AI agents have been defined. The five main types are simple reflex agents, model-based reflex agents, goal-based agents, utility-based agents and learning agents. Each has distinct strengths and applications, ranging from basic automated systems to highly adaptable AI models. More about each from IBM.

How quickly are they being implemented?

Gartner predicts that by 2026, over 30% of global insurance carriers will have fully implemented AI Agents across at least two major operational processes, such as policy issuance and claims processing. This underscores the necessity for precise agent design patterns. Read more.
