Data Fuels our Business: by Doug Grant CIP.
Data is the core of your business, and mine. Data feeds our financial reporting and our payrolls. Good customer data help us provide the level of service our customers demand while feeding cross-selling tactics. Marketplace and demographic data help us replace lost customers and grow the business. In insurance, data is the heart of the product, for product features and prices are based on historical data. Everywhere we turn, we are gathering, validating, storing, managing, analysing, using data to help meet objectives. Like any resource, it is not how much data we have, but how we use it that counts.

IBC Perspective, September 2003: Coping with Uncertainty.
The goal of auto insurance reform discussions currently underway in most provinces is to bring down future claims costs enough to allow prices to fall. In some provinces auto insurance prices are already heading south. Longer term, however, many problems will be exacerbated or will reappear because of increased regulatory intervention. Auto insurance is an unsatisfying market for most insurance companies, generating persistent weak financial results.

from Doug:
Attended our son's high school awards ceremony recently, for grades ten through twelve (grads received their awards in June). Although the school is focused on university preparation, it was encouraging to hear their message about "effort". With two months until Ontario university applications are due, our son has some decisions to make - where has the time gone? This evening, parents follow their son's two day school class agenda to briefly hear about curriculum and meet teachers - should be interesting.
