Aligning Insurance and Emerging Technologies: Existential Requirement or A Step Too Far?
A recent report from SMA, Emerging Technologies: Reshaping the Next-Gen Insurer, has an ambitious scope, on which it delivers. Moreover, it contains a surplus of well-supported recommendations for aligning threats and opportunities driven by the technologies with changes in insurance purpose and process.

The challenge we see for some insurers – especially one segment of insurers – is how to select strategies that are comprehensive enough to address the opportunities and risks in a meaningful fashion without committing an unsustainable amount of resources.

Gartner: self-driving vehicles will be the first pervasive robots to consumers
Self-driving and autonomous vehicles, in particular, are much closer to reality than most people and businesses realize, according to Gartner, Inc. Over the next six years, self-aware vehicles will emerge first that are increasingly also able to autonomously sense, interpret, decide, act and communicate with other automobiles, infrastructures, businesses, people and organizations. As this self-awareness matures into the next decade, vehicles will become progressively smarter and autonomous, leading to the most fundamental change in transportation, mobility and society.

Guy Carpenter & Company, LLC, the leading global risk and reinsurance specialist and a wholly owned subsidiary of Marsh & McLennan Companies, has announced the release of the 2014 Insurance Risk Benchmarks Research: Annual Statistical Review, the first in a two-part series detailing research executed in collaboration with Columbia University. This, the fourth annual report, provides detailed analysis and insight on the property/casualty industry to help insurers strategically evaluate and benchmark inputs to economic capital models.

Sun Life survey: Health is the number one reason Canadians can't retire when planned
A new study reveals that more than two-thirds of retired Canadians did not stop working on the date they planned. Among those Canadians who did not retire as planned, nearly half cited personal health as the primary reason for retiring earlier. In fact, almost half of Canadians have experienced a health event, with nearly a quarter of them impacted by a mental health issue, according to the 2014 Sun Life Canadian Health Index, conducted by Ipsos Reid.

TD Insurance: young Canadians with debt are financially unprepared for sudden illness
A significant number of Canadians who hold debt would struggle to cope with the unexpected loss of their income, according to new research. A recent survey commissioned by TD Insurance reveals that 39 per cent of Canadians surveyed have no idea how they would pay for their expenses if they had no income for six months – a figure that rose to 44 per cent for those under the age of 35.
