Consumer Resources

Insurance-Canada.ca is not staffed to answer specific insurance-related questions or to offer individual insurance advice, nor do we have the necessary qualifications.

To help answer several of the frequently asked questions from Consumers we have put together an extensive collection of insurance news and information on our web site. A good place to start is Insurance: what's it all about?

Visit our Online Quotes Overview for considerations and caveats, and our Buying Tips and Checklists offers further advice for consumers.

If you have a question about a specific type of insurance, visit the corresponding section of our site. Each section has additional information on that specific type of insurance and several directories with a list of featured providers and their contact information.

If you have a question that's not answered through our site, contact one of the consumer insurance information centres listed below.

Need more information? Contact a consumer insurance information centre

If we haven't answered your question on our site or if you require specific individual assistance, contact one of the following resources:

Regarding life/health insurance: the OmbudService for Life & Health Insurance.

Regarding general (automobile, home, business) insurance: the consumer information centre of the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

Got a complaint about your insurance?

If your complaint concerns a licensed property and casualty insurance broker in Ontario, contact the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO). RIBO is a self-regulatory organization that regulates and enforces the Code of Conduct for property and casualty insurance brokers in Ontario. If you have a complaint regarding a RIBO-licensed insurance broker, contact their Consumer Complaints Officer at (416) 365-1900 or toll-free at 1-800-265-3097.

Otherwise, see Who ya gonna call – when you have a complaint?

Want to report a case of insurance fraud?

It is estimated that 10-15% of every dollar policyholders pay for insurance goes to pay false claims.

Call Crime Stoppers, at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). If your tip helps police or an insurance company catch someone who is committing fraud, you may be eligible for a cash reward. Your identity will remain anonymous.

Another place to report fraud is the Insurance Bureau of Canada. For more information about insurance fraud, see their material on Insurance Crime.

Protection for policyholders

OK, you've bought insurance to protect yourself and your belongings, but who protects you if your insurer goes out of business?
