Managing General Agents (MGA) sit between the Insurance Companies which ultimately insure the risk and insurance brokers who sell the insurance to the ultimate consumers of the product.
Insurance brokers often deal directly with insurance companies and between the two parties, all of the roles which need to be performed to manufacture, sell and service insurance are performed.
In support of brokers, an MGA may develop and provide specialty services to replace or complement those the broker provides in areas of marketing, sales and customer service. In support of insurance companies, an MGA may replace or complement insurer services in support of distribution, from education to product and sales support to compensation management.
In a different way, an MGA may help define a special insurance product for a particular geography. They could undertake a number of roles in support of that product, from entire management of underwriting, marketing, service and claims to some small subset of those functions. Some retail insurance brokers have created an MGA as a separate business.
